Saint James, a fisherman and one of the first apostles, was distinguished as being in Jesus’ inner most circle along with his brother John and Simon Peter. James was one of three apostles to witness the transfiguration. He is the only apostle whose martyrdom is recorded in the New Testament. After Jesus’ resurrection, James proclaimed the gospel and was the first apostle to shed his blood in faith in Jerusalem in 44AD. James teaches the importance of humility and the importance of God’s call. He is the patron saint of pilgrims, laborers and rheumatoid sufferers.
